T.A and STA moving forward to unification.

Monday, August 5th, 2013

The Koryo Taekwondo Centre supports this move as we all have a responsibility to the Taekwondo youth of Australia.

The Board of Taekwondo Australia held a meeting on Saturday 3rd August with all of the state presidents and delegates to debrief them of the unification discussions to date. The Board then requested the states to consider whether or not to proceed with unification between Taekwondo Australia and Sports Taekwondo Australia.

To assist you in your understanding here are some of the facts that were provided to us:

1.     The WTF has appointed an independent mediator who is responsible to see through a resolution between TA and STA.

2.     The WTF has encouraged TA and STA to merge.

3.     The unification process will be assisted by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

4.     The WTF recognises STA as the MNA, and as such the ASC can only entertain recognising STA.

5.     The ASC currently does not recognise any organisation representing the sport of Taekwondo.

6.     The ASC seeks a resolution for all members.

7.     As a way forward, the WTF would like unification to take place with the following points:

a.     That a new constitution which meets the ASC’s criteria be developed.

b.     That an interim board is established.

c.      That the interim board contain equal numbers of current TA and STA board members

d.     That the unified body be structured as a Company limited by guarantee.

e.     That the unified body be transparent and democratically run.

f.       That as soon as practicable, both parties enter into a Heads of Agreement (HoA) which records the unification process.

g.     That upon signing the HoA, TA members will immediately be permitted access to sanctioned WTF global events and domestic selection events.

8.     That due diligence of both organisations will be part of the unification process.

9.     The ASC have agreed to assist with resources.

10. It is suggested that at the state level, we will undertake the same.

As TVI’s President and State Delegate, together with David Burns (Secretary General) attended this meeting to represent Taekwondo Victoria and we have both voted in favour ofan in principle agreement for T.A. to proceed with further exploring the process of unification with STA.

To understand the context of Saturday’s vote; it is important for T.A. to be able to now go back to the WTF, ASC and STA this Wednesday, 7th August, and be able to say that they have the full backing of their voting members, the State Associations, and that there is a definite desire to now do some serious and detailed horse-trading to develop a  constitution and other details of the proposed unification that can then be presented to all T.A. Head Instructors and properly voted on.

To vote against Saturday’s proposal to “explore the process of unification” would have been akin to accepting the status quo with no consideration for any alternatives or hope for the future.  We do not believe that such a position would be in the best interests of our members.

Please understand that Saturday’s vote does not tie us to any final outcome at this stage.  Rather it is a show of good faith on behalf of the States and T.A., that we are all committed to taking the next step in developing a lasting solution to the situation in which we have found ourselves.  One which will be in the best interests of all Taekwondo practitioners and players in Australia.

Once the full details of the proposed unifying constitution and all unification processes (including due diligence, etc.) have been completed by the parties involved, these will be divulged in full to all TVI voting members at a Special General Meeting so that you can guide us as to how Taekwondo Victoria should finally vote on this matter.

We realise that we have made an important decision on your behalf and we would welcome your feed-back on this issue.

I would encourage you re-read all of the above and carefully consider the implications.

From this point forward, our expectation is that things will move forward fairly quickly.  T.A., S.T.A., A.S.C. and W.T.F. will be meeting by conference-call in two days time so if you have input that you wish to be forwarded for consideration before then, we will need to receive it before 5:00pm tomorrow, Tuesday 6th August.

Yours Sincerely,

Barry Akehurst

President

Amalgamation of T,A and S.T.A

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

For Australian Taekwondo to have a positive future this amalgamation must happen.

States Meet To Discuss Unification

The Board of Taekwondo Australia will be meeting in Melbourne on Saturday, 3 August 2013 with the State Presidents and State Delegates to provide first hand information on the discussions that were held with STA in Mexico last month.

The meeting will also discuss the bipartisan approach that is being undertaken by TA and STA to negotiate a pathway to amalgamate both bodies into a single national body for the governance of the martial art and the sport of taekwondo.

Subject to the agreement of both parties, we will release as much progress information as we are able to.

Our quickest of getting information to you is via the Taekwondo Australia FaceBook page where you are also able to leave a comment.

WTF, TA and STA discuss amalgamation in Puebla.
