Vladivostok, Russia Set for 6th World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships

Vladivostok, Russia is ready for the 6th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships set for July 29-31, 2011.
The three-day annual event, which will take place at the 1,061-seat Olympiets sports complex, is expected to attract about 570 athletes from 52 countries.
The first edition of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships was held in Seoul, Korea in 2006, drawing 407 athletes from 57 countries, compared with 400 athletes from 50 countries at the 2nd World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Incheon, Korea. The third event was held in Ankara, Turkey in 2008 with 363 athletes from 48 countries attending, while a total of 565 athletes from 59 countries participated in the 4th World Poomsae Championships in Cairo, Egypt in 2009. The previous World Poomsae Championships were held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2010, with the attendance of 447 athletes from 59 countries.
Among eye-catching athletes at the upcoming Vladivostok championships are Korea’s Young-Ae Seo, the five-time world poomsae champion, and Sister Linda Sim of Singapore, who will compete for top honors in the women’s individual 2nd master division.
Eight countries are to send more than 15 athletes to the Vladivostok championships. They are the United States (24 athletes), Iran (23), host Russia (21), Chinese Taipei (20), Germany (16), Australia (15), China (15) and Egypt (15). Korea sends six male and five female athletes.
For the first time in WTF World Poomsae Championships history, participating contestants will wear the WTF-recognized poomsae competition uniforms.
Athletes will compete for 18 gold medals up for grabs at the Vladivostok World Poomsae Championships.
A total of 50 international poomsae referees will officiate at the Vladivostok championships, in which three courts will be used.
After performing two of the four 1st compulsory poomsae predetermined by the WTF, the top 50 percent of participants will qualify for the next round according to the average score of the two performances.
In the event that there are more than 21 competitors and the athletes are divided into two groups in the preliminary round according to drawing of lots, the top 50 percent of the participants in each group will advance to the semifinal round.
The top 50 percent of participants will be required to perform two of the four 2nd compulsory poomsae predetermined by the WTF, the top eight athletes in each category (individual, team and pair) will be selected and advance to the final round according to the average score of the two performances.
The top eight athletes in each category will be required to perform the remaining two 2nd compulsory poomsae. The ranking of the top four athletes in each category will be decided by the average score of the two performances.
In the case that there are eight or less individuals or teams per division, they will automatically qualify for the final without preliminary and semifinal rounds. In the case there are 20 or less individuals and teams per division, they will automatically qualify for the semifinal round without preliminaries. Accordingly the top eight individuals or teams will reach the final round.
The top four athletes in each division will receive medals and certificates.
On July 28, an extraordinary WTF Council meeting will take place at the Hotel Hyundai Vladivostok.
At the WTF Council meeting, the Council will decide on the host sites for the 2013 WTF World Taekwondo Championships and the 7th WTF World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships to be held in 2012.
The participants will hear reports on the current status on the protector and scoring system (PSS).
On July 29, there will be an opening ceremony of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships at the venue, which will feature various programs.
At the opening ceremony, a 10-minute Russian taekwondo performance and a 15-minute WTF Taekwondo Demonstration Team performance are scheduled.
The opening ceremony will highlight a five-member kyorugi team exhibition match. Four countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Russia and Korea will send their respective five-member teams to Vladivostok for the exhibition match. Another semifinal match is scheduled on July 30 and a final match and a bronze-medal decider will take place on July 31.
Another highlight will be a free-style poomsae exhibition event involving national teams from the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam. Free-style poomsae is the performance based on taekwondo techniques with composition of music and choreography.

T.V.I Technical Competition Changes

Please note that, due to some changes to the format of the 2011 Nationals being held in Canberra in September, only the Gold and Silver medallists in the Coloured Belts will be eligible to represent Victoria at the Nationals. We are restricted to only having two Coloured Belt State representatives for each age/weight division in both Sparring and Poomsae. There is no changes for Black Belts

  On behalf of Taekwondo Victoria Inc, it is my pleasure to invite you and your club to participate in the 2011 Victorian Technical Selection Championships at Box Hill Aqualink, Surrey Drive. This is a technical competition for Poomsae and Self Defence competitors wishing to qualify for the 2011 National Taekwondo championships in Canberra on September 8 – 11, 2011. Competitors placing 1st or 2nd in the coloured belt divisions will qualify to represent Victoria at the 2011 National championships. Black belt competitors need not place in this competition but are encouraged to compete for the competition practice. Unfortunately, due to time and venue availability, no events other than Black Belt standard individual poomsae can be provided for this year.

Craigieburn Grading

Even though it was a very cold Sunday Grading we gained another 20 new Yellow Belts with some as young as 5 years of age.
The Outstanding Student awards went to Roxburgh Park students Rebecca Delia and Daniel Calafiore who both did extremly well considering the cold.
As always we would like to thank all the parents for putting up with the cold weather and of course Joyce Stivala who is always there to support our students.

WTF World Qualification Tournament for London Olympic Games Concludes in Resounding Success

 After four days of dynamic and fair competitions, the WTF World Qualification Tournament for the 2012 London Olympic Games wrapped up in a great success in Baku, Azerbaijan on July 3, 2011.
A total of 15 countries took at least one ticket to the taekwondo competition of the 2012 London Olympic Games through the just-ended WTF World Qualification Tournament.
Through the World Qualification Tournament, which took place at the Sarhadchi Sport Olympic Center, Korea grabbed four tickets for the taekwondo competition of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Six countries – host Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, China, Croatia and Chinese Taipei – won two berths each for the 2012 Olympic Games, while eight countries – Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Sweden, Turkey, Brazil, France, Italy and Greece – took one spot to the London Olympic Games.

A total of 128 athletes will compete for top honors at the taekwondo competition of the 2012 London Olympic Games, and 24 spots were taken through this World Qualification Tournament at Baku.
Four spots will be decided on through the tripartite consultation among the IOC, the ANOC and the WTF, which are known as “wild cards,” while the host country of Great Britain will secure four spots automatically, which already announced the weight divisions in which whose athletes will compete – Men under 68kg, Men under 80kg, Women -57kg and Women -67kg.
The owners of the remaining 96 Olympic tickets will be decided through continental qualification tournaments: 24 spots each through the Asian Qualification Tournament (on Nov. 4-6 in Bangkok, Thailand), the Pan American Qualification Tournament (on Nov. 18-20 in Queretaro, Mexico) and the European Qualification Tournament (on Jan. 27-29, 2012 in Kazan, Russia).
Sixteen sports will be decided through the African Qualification Tournament to be held on Jan. 11-12 in Port Said, Egypt, while the Oceania Qualification Tournament (on Sep.11, in Noumea, New Caledonia) will decide on eight spots for the taekwondo competition of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Olympic Qualification Event – Day 4

Australia had one athlete competing on the final day of the World Qualification event.
Day 4 saw Caroline Marton compete in the Female 57Kg Division – Lost to USA 1, 5

Australia has not qualified for the Olympics at the World Qualification Tournament but has another opportunity at the Oceania Regional Qualifications in Noumea, New Caledonia in September.

Australia had no athletes competing on Day 2 of the World Qualification event.
Day 3 saw Burak Hasan compete in the Male 80Kg Division First Round Bye Defeated India 6,2 Lost to AZE 10,8 – AZE placed 1st overall

Despite all the necessary information relating to the 23rd and 24th July event having already been published and available from I have received few enquiries which I now feel I need to reinforce.
1. As previously informed,weigh-in will be conducted at the Box Hill Aquatic Centre, Surrey Drive, BOX HILL between 4.00 and 8.00 pm on 22nd July 2011. We expect most competitors to complete their weigh-inon that day, however in case of those who are comingfrom distant parts of Victoria or interstate, they will be allowed to weigh-in first thing on Saturday and Sunday morning (thedays of actual competition). You will need to contact me by e-mail ( prior to 22nd to arrange for this. 

2. Also, as previously informed but for those who didn’t read my last letter and the Tournament Pack, Competition will take place at the Croydon Leisure& Aquatic Centre, 11 Civic Square, CROYDON Vic., on 23rdand 24thJuly2011
