Taekwondo Australia – Important Notice

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Taekwondo Australia has been made aware of an email circulated in Queensland which contains statements by STA Chairman, Mr Kotsifas purporting to represent the contents of a communiqué from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in regard to proposed merger talks between TA and STA.

Mr Kotsifas has made several statements which detract from the spirit and the true content of the letter from the IOC.

The IOC’s letter states “.. we recommend that the parties meet on the occasion of the upcoming Combat Games to be held in Beijing in early September. The objective would be to obtain an agreement from TA and STA for a merger between the two organisation, so that all TA and STA athletes have the possibility to compete in the qualification events for the 2012 London Olympic Games

What Mr Kotsifas has failed to advise, is that the IOC and the WTF have also agreed that if the agreement cannot be reached, then the matter will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Taekwondo Australia will send our negotiation team to Beijing and negotiate in good faith for the best possible outcome for the Australian Taekwondo family. Failing an acceptable resolution, then the matter will be referred to the independent body being CAS for ultimate resolution.

We regret that we again are obliged to disclose what should have been private and confidential correspondence, but given STA’s inaccurate statements, we have been left with no choice.
